Green Garden HotelGreen Garden Hotel
Green Garden Hotel 2.5
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia
The 30-room Green Garden Hotel is a family-run, budget hotel offering clean, pleasant rooms close to the beach, shopping, and the Ngurah Rai International Airport. Though the property is a bit dated and in need of some updates, overall it’s a cheap and cheerful option with a small, but lovely, outdoor pool flanked by greenery and an on-site spa offering an array of treatments. There’s also a restaurant and bar that’s popular with locals and guests alike that serves tasty home-style meals as well as a buffet breakfast that's included in the room rates. Families are drawn by the hotel’s larger Family Rooms, which have bunk beds, as well as other kid-friendly offerings like a kids’ pool and babysitting services.

One of the newer properties in the Legian Beach area, the Swiss-Belinn Legian is a 123-room value hotel with contemporary appeal. Rooms are basic but clean and equipped with modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning, but they lack drawers for storing clothing. A rooftop pool, small fitness center, and meeting rooms are available for guests' use and there's an on-site bar/restaurant in the center atrium that serves a varied Indonesian and international breakfast buffet. However, there's no spa and most rooms lack balconies.

The boutique, mid-range Dekuta Hotel is in Kuta’s city center -- a two-minute walk to Kuta Beach. It has an infinity pool with a waterfall feature, and 49 big, air-conditioned rooms, some with balconies and rainfall showers, at value prices. The on-site restaurants and bars, including a rooftop bar and lounge, are popular with guests as well as locals, but breakfast is not included in room rates. Wi-Fi is free but can be sluggish. Travelers might want to check out the beachfront Patra Jasa Bali Resort & Villas, which, although not centrally located, has a spa and offers free breakfast.

The 41-room Bali Agung Village is a good mid-range choice in the heart of Seminyak, just a five-minute walk from Seminyak Beach. Traditional Balinese rooms have air-conditioning plus furnished terraces in addition to walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. However, some rooms are small and have tired style. The on-site restaurant and poolside bar also offer good value for the money, and there are freebies including breakfast, sometimes sluggish Wi-Fi, babysitting, and an area shuttle. The hotel isn't the best choice for those in need of pampering -- for that, consider the Villa Kubu, with its modern rooms, spa, and butler service, but expect to spend far more money.

The 88-room Hotel Terrace at Kuta is a mid-range property conveniently located right off of Kuta’s main road; the location is near shops and restaurants galore, and is a five-minute walk from the beach. This simple, modern property features minimalist interiors that include a restaurant in its open-plan lobby, which opens out onto the lovely outdoor pool area. Rooms are a bit small, but pleasant and simply furnished with contemporary decor. All of them have private balconies or terraces, some with direct pool access, though the larger Premiere Rooms have lackluster views. Frosted glass walls separating showers from bedrooms can pose privacy issues for some.

The 87-room Adi Dharma Hotel is a mid-range hotel located in a busy area just a five-minute walk to Kuta Beach. Top features include outdoor pools, a garden, and a full-service spa. A free beach shuttle and 24-hour restaurant and bar are offered, but no fitness center. Guests desiring a more luxurious stay should consider the beachfront Patra Jasa Bali Resort & Villas, with its modern design and outdoor pools with ocean views.

Rooms and villas are done in a blend of traditional and modern Balinese decor with amenities like free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and coffeemakers. The free breakfast includes a mix of hot and cold dishes, and the restaurant also serves traditional Balinese cuisine for lunch and dinner. Opened in 2013, this 92-room upscale hotel nonetheless offers budget-friendly rates, and is located near the main intersection in Kuta, close to area attractions and the airport -- but a bit far from the beach. The Kana Kuta has a nice outdoor pool, small fitness center, free area shuttle, and free breakfast. Rooms are minimally decorated but spotlessly clean, with high-quality mattresses and linens, and flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers; some rooms have balconies. The kids' center is a draw for families. While the Kana Kuta might be slightly removed from the action, it's good value for the money.

The Gong 2.0

The Gong is a family-owned budget property offering 12 rooms near several popular surfing spots, the closest of which (Suluban Beach) is a little over 10 minutes away on foot. Rooms are small and simple, with balconies and private bathrooms with showers, but they aren't air-conditioned and many have seen better days. A cafe serves all meals, and the outdoor pool is a lovely place to hang out --  additionally, movies are shown nightly in a comfy lounge. The Uluwatu Temple and popular Single Fin bar are within a five-minute drive, and the hotel rents cheap scooters that make getting around easy. The Gong's rates are hard to beat for budget-conscious travelers, but for more style in the same area, the Lullaby Bungalows has pricier, nicer digs.

The 15-room Saren Indah Hotel is a family-owned, mid-range property with an Old Bali vibe. It is one of the older hotels in the area, located in Nyuh Kuning village, with both the popular Monkey Forest and bustling Ubud a short distance away on foot. Although starting to look a little old, rooms are well-maintained with four-poster beds draped with mosquito nets, spacious bathrooms, and peaceful balconies overlooking lovely rice fields. There is an outdoor pool with lounge chairs and an open-air spa on-site. Wi-Fi is free, but signal strength can be inconsistent. Overall, guests willing to overlook the slightly dated feel of the place will get a good value stay -- especially if they're a fan of monkeys who occasionally drift over from the nearby sanctuary.

There are 101 guest rooms at this three-pearl property in central Ubud. Rooms are basic and bright, with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, balconies, and free Wi-Fi, though they may disappoint those looking for a taste of Balinese decor. The hotel has two restaurants and a cafe, and a buffet breakfast with everything from eggs to Asian noodles is included in the room rates. There are also two swimming pools and a spa. Keep in mind that packs of monkeys are frequent visitors here -- they're either charming or a nuisance depending on the traveler. Those looking to stay in a more secluded location should check out Jungjungan Ubud Hotel and Spa, an intimate boutique option where rates are just a bit higher.

The 28-room Sri Ratih Cottages is an upper-middle-range boutique resort with a rustic-chic vibe located in a quiet village within walking distance of Ubud. Rooms are particularly smart and spacious with nicely finished bathrooms, though views are often limited. Excellent food and an attractive -- albeit small -- pool area gives this hotel some real polish, with the only major drawbacks being lack of shuttle service and poor Wi-Fi. Overall, it's certainly one of the more stylish resorts of its kind, and pretty low rates make it a bargain too.

Junjungan Ubud Hotel and Spa is a wonderfully peaceful boutique-style property surrounded by picturesque paddy fields. While some will love the feeling of remoteness, others might find the setting isolated, despite its location just a 10-minute drive from Ubud. The 10 rooms are clean and attractive and -- most importantly -- have balconies overlooking the lush surroundings. Evening fireflies add a touch of magic. Although the pool is smallish, the overall quality of facilities is impressive and the rates are more than reasonable for these intimate and serene mid-range lodgings.

Bali Villa Ubud is a small resort complex set in pretty gardens outside the tourist center of Ubud, Bali's de facto arts and culture capital. While the location can feel isolated, the surroundings are picturesque and the hotel offers a free shuttle service into town. Spacious rooms have charming carved wood furniture and outdoor seating areas. There's also a pleasant pool area and a restaurant, and the rates are competitive for a mid-range hotel.

The upscale, yet affordable, 90-room Centra Taum Seminyak Bali is a hip and family-friendly property with a peaceful location and a sleek pool with kiddy section. This property also offers a spa, poolside dining, and a rooftop terrace for yoga and meditation. Although in walking distance to the nightlife, the hotel is slightly on the town’s outskirts.
Tegal SariTegal Sari
Tegal Sari 2.0
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
No Live Rates
Considered one of the top budget hotels in Indonesia, the Tegal Sari is a complex of 27 rooms and villas located in Ubud near the Monkey Forest. The lovely tropical grounds are a highlight, and there are great views of the surrounding rice paddies. Unfortunately, as of 2015 nearby construction somewhat mars the tranquility in areas, but overall, the atmosphere is serene. Rooms are simple but clean and have balconies, soaking tubs, air-conditioning, and minibars. There is a rooftop stone-bottom pool, and the poolside bar ensures cocktails are not far away. The two on-site restaurants and 24-hour room service provide reasonably priced menus, but many terrific Ubud restaurants are just outside the hotel. Spa services are available on-site, and the yoga room is a highlight. The Tegal Sari is popular and frequently sells out, so rooms, which can be reserved only through the hotel, often need to be booked at least six months in advance.

Situated on the Bukit Peninsula, a short walk from Padang Padang Beach, the Lullaby Bungalows is a simple mid-range property with a nice dash of rustic charm. The 10 individual, air-conditioned bungalows have thatched roofs and plenty of space and privacy, not to mention lovely outdoor bathrooms (which, admittedly, won't be for everyone). An a la carte breakfast is free, and the hotel also serves lunch and dinner. The outdoor pool area is a great spot for relaxing, and the beach is only 10 minutes away on foot. While the hotel sees all kinds of travelers, the vibe is geared more toward couples and friends than those with kids; families may prefer the Flower Bud Bungalows Balangan, which offers family rooms and has two pools.

Situated 25-minutes north of Ubud, this 17-room, upper-middle-range property is simpler than many in the area, but can be a decent value for couples and families looking for the private villa experience. One- and Two-Bedroom Villas are modern and feature full kitchens and private plunge pools, though the decor and design isn't quite as stylish as many properties in Ubud. The hotel also features an on-site restaurant with free breakfast, an outdoor pool, many activities, and a free area shuttle. Guests looking for a bit more style who don't mind being outside central Ubud may want to check out Kamandalu Ubud, though not all of its authentic villas have pools.

More
The New Kuta Hotel - A Lexington Legacy Hotel is a mid-range property on a quiet hillside in Pecatu, well over 30 minutes from Kuta despite the hotel's name. The beautiful setting overlooks the ocean, but there's no direct beach access. Features include an outdoor infinity pool and poolside bar, and two restaurants serving local and international cuisine. The 265 rooms and suites are simple and bright, and all have air-conditioning, TVs, and balconies; some have kitchenettes. Unfortunately, many rooms could use a refresh and better cleaning. This property also tends to attract big tour groups, which some guests have found disruptive. The price here is hard to beat, but travelers who don't mind spending a little more could consider La Joya, Villa & Bungalows, a smaller property with direct beach access.
